EBA Open Studio - Triangle XIII

The Triangle Series was started 13 years ago in my second open studio experience at Enriched Bread Artists. I cut an equilateral triangle 18″ on each side in the wall and it has remained there ever since. The first of the series, “Triangle I”, was a kaleidoscope 1.5 m long with 6 mirrors and a piece of cut blue stained glass. The visual image gave the sense that the piece was 2-D when in fact, it was 3-D.

Triangle XIII is a small room constructed from a combination of drywall and office partitions and painted red. A 500 W Fresnel theater lighting fixture installed in the floor pointing up. The actual thickness of the triangular wall opening is that of an edged piece of 1/2″ drywall. This edge in Triangle XIII is painted blue.

EBA Open Studio - Spatial Blue with a Thin Red Line

One of the works that I am showing at the Enriched Bread Open Studio (EBA) is entitled “Spatial Blue with a Thin Red Line”. This is a combination of two previous works.

The “Thin Red Line” is a strip of red paint on the wall lit by a focused elliptical theatre light. This was previously shown at last years EBA Open Studio.

“Spatial Blue” was originally built for the EBA “Verticality” show at Gallery 101 in July and August 2008. The hexagonal shape was based on my site specific commissioned work entitled “Diffract” for the Canada Dance Festival at the National Arts Center (NAC) in June. The NAC’s architecture is based on the hexagon. “Spatial Blue” was also shown at the Cube Gallery as part of the Candela exhibition.

Pictures of the work are shown below. The Thin Red Line is washed out due to the dynamic range of the light involved in the work. The detailed images are views of the interior of the lower part of “Spatial Blue” though a similar view is seen in the upper part.

Festival X at EBA

Enriched Bread Artists is participating as a venue in Festival X, Ottawa’s Photography Festival. EBA is located at 951 Gladstone Avenue, just west of Preston, in Ottawa, Canada.

As part of this event, I am exhibiting a video captured image in a digital frame entitled “Tunnels”. This was originally done in 2004 as an illustration for a short story “Tunnels” by J.M. Heluk and published in the Harrow Anthology, “Fear of the Unknown” (ISBN 1-59080-416-3) by Echelon Press. This anthology is edited by Kfir Luzzatto and Monica O’Rourke and the art editor is Jason Nolan.

I am also participating in a panel discussion at EBA on Saturday, September 20th from 1 to 3 pm.
